I started roofing part time when I was about 14, and by 16, I was roofing full time. When I was 18, I worked 10 hours a day, 6 days a week and was fast becoming a professional roofer. I traveled to California and was a sub contractor at a young age. When I turned 21, I started my roofing company. I would do very well with the company during the summer months, but would struggle in the winter. I stayed busy repairing roofs after major storms, but I would then subcontract from big companies as things slowed down. It would continue like this for over nine years.
I married my beautiful wife when I was 29, but we were poorer than poor. I was so poor that I had to raise rabbits and sell them during the winter months. One day I was walking through our front room and saw a preacher on TV who was talking about tithing. He said something that changed my life. I had been a Christian for years but never tithed. I felt this was the area in my life that God was wanting to change. I heard the preacher reading the scripture that said, “Try me, and prove me, that I won’t pour you out a blessing so big you won’t be able to contain it all.” He said if I would tithe, God would change my life. I told my wife Kay that we needed to tithe and she agreed. This was in the dead of winter and we were raising rabbits and selling them just to survive. The next time I sold $20 worth of rabbits, I took $2 and gave it to the homeless shelter. Jesus said, “If you give to the least of these, it’s like giving to me.” What happened after we started tithing changed my life, my family and my business.
At this time, my business was completely residential and I mostly worked small jobs. We went from dirt poor to being able to be a blessing to other people. Over the next few years we were able to buy houses, new trucks and equipment. Our business expanded exponentially every year. We have never had a year without growing. The truth of tithing is very dear to me, when I honored God with the first 10%; he honored me with finances, a wonderful wife, two beautiful kids, and the ability to help other people.
Our business has expanded; we are now proudly serving the Oklahoma City metro area, the Tulsa Metro area, the Bartlesville area, Grove/Grand Lake, and the Muskogee/Wagoner area as well as Southeastern Kansas.
